10 Legendary Creatures That Could Be Real, And Where To Look For Them

1. The Jersey Devil

One of America's most famous urban legends, this cloven-hoofed, winged, fork-tailed critter haunts the Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey, terrifying locals with its horrible scream.

Legend tells that the creature was the cursed 13th child of a woman known as Mother Leeds, while others say Leeds was a witch who had a child with the Devil himself. Whatever it is, Napoleon's older brother Joseph Bonaparte swore he saw it while hunting in 1820.

2. The Chupacabra

Seen throughout the southern United States and Mexico, the first reports of these creatures came from Puerto Rico in 1995. That year, a farmer found 8 of his sheep had been attacked and killed, with all of their blood drained out.

Chupacabras (Spanish for "goat-suckers") are described as small mammals with scales and spines on their back who feed on the blood of livestock.

3. Shuck, The Black Dog

For centuries, ghostly black dogs who walk on silent feet have haunted small English villages. The most famous and feared of all is Shuck, a giant who's said to have one glowing red eye. Seeing Shuck is said to be an omen that you will die before the end of the year.

Shuck famously attacked a church in Suffolk in 1577, collapsing park of the building and leaving scorch marks on the door, which can still be seen to this day.

4. Mothman

When people from the small town of Clendenin, West Virginia started seeing a strange creature flying around the nearby area, they had no idea what to think. The "Mothman" was taller than a human, with huge wings and glowing red eyes.

After appearing again and again for a year, the sightings stopped suddenly after the nearby Silver Bridge collapsed in 1967, killing nearly 50 people. Some say the Mothman was trying to warn people about the upcoming disaster.

5. The Beast of Bladenboro

When a rash of pet killings struck this small town in North Carolina in 1953, hunters searched for the animal behind them. What they found was described as a huge panther-like creature with giant claws.

In the months that followed hunters caught lots of bobcats, lynxes and other large cats, but none that looked like the Beast itself. It could still be roaming the woods near Bladenboro, looking for its next meal.

6. The Skunk Ape

While Sasquatch or Big Foot has been spotted from coast to coast, the Skunk Ape likes to stick close to the area surrounding Dade County, Florida.

That's where it was spotted in 2006 by a woman who noticed an animal stealing apples from her backyard. Her photos are the best evidence of the creature we have, but locals say they can recognize its distinctive smell.

7. The Wendigo

There are countless stories of this creature, which has been described as both a monster and a demon that possesses murderers and cannibals. Some Native American tribes feared them so much they trained Medicine Men to identify and kill Wendigos.

One Ojibwe scholar says that you can spot a Wendigo by sight because of "its complexion the ash gray of death, and its eyes pushed back deep into their sockets, the Wendigo looked like a gaunt skeleton recently disinterred from the grave"

8. Sasquatch

Every state in America has its own Sasquatch or Big Foot sightings, but they seem to prefer the Pacific Northwest. Described as 2-3 meters tall, with a foul smell and huge, glowing eyes, there have been stories told about Big Foot-like creatures for centuries all over the world.

The most famous sighting of Big Foot comes from the 1967 footage shot by Robert Gimlin and Roger Patterson in the wilds of Northern California. Gimlin still swears his footage is genuine, and Patterson did too until his death from cancer in 1972.

9. Mongolian Death Worms

Also called "large intestine worms" for their distinctive look, these legendary insects of the Gobi Desert are said to shoot acid and electricity out of their mouths. The explorer Roy Chapman Andrews wrote in 1926 that according to legend their acid is "so poisonous that merely to touch it means instant death."

There haven't been many sightings of the worms since the 1950s, which some blame on the fact that their habitat on the Chinese-Mongolian border is off limits to tourists.

10. The Loch Ness Monster

The Loch Ness Phenomena Investigation Bureau is still searching for physical evidence of Nessie, but dozens of amateur monster hunters claim to have seen this famous beast.

Newspaper accounts from the 1930s describe Nessie as looking like "a dragon or a prehistoric animal," and while we normally think of her as a sea serpent older legends say she walks on land to hunt for livestock.
