5 Ways To Stop Mosquitoes From Feasting On You This Summer

If you're like me, mosquitoes just love to feast on you during the summer time.

I can be with a group of 50 people and somehow those pesky suckers still find their way to me. To make matters worse, I'm allergic to them and they swell up. No thanks!

There are so many remedies out there to keep skeeters away, but sometimes it's the little things that can help prevent them, too!

Take a look at these 6 things you can do to help yourself steer clear of mosquito bites this summer. They are all recommendations from Dr. Jonathan Day, a mosquito expert in Florida.

Using lemon and rosemary will help repel mosquitoes from any outdoor gathering you might be having. Weather it's just a family dinner outdoors or a big BBQ on the patio, make sure everyone is protected!

Keep It Breezy

Dr. Day says any breeze over 1MPH makes it hard for mosquitoes to fly, so try and pick a breezy place for your picnic or hike! Plug in fans work well on your patio as well. Since mosquitoes tend to fly closer to the ground, point the fan downwards will block their ability to get you.

When you drink alcohol, your body's metabolic rate increases which in turn increases the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) you emit. Mosquitoes are attracted to CO2, so the more you drink, the more likely you'll be hit by a swarm. You also emit more CO2 if your heart rate is elevated, which can be caused by exercise and even eating spicy foods.

Being overweight or pregnant can also be a factor when it comes to mosquitoes. You emit more CO2, which attracts the bugs.

That being said, trying remedies such as eating a clove of garlic or buying ultrasonic repellent devices is just a waste, according to Dr. Day.

The Tighter The Weave, The Better The Defense

Women's Health

Mosquitoes can't get through clothing that is tightly woven. Linen and cotton are terrible defense against the bugs, but synthetic fibers, like high-tech athletic apparel, are usually secure enough to protect against mosquito bites.

Wear Bright Colors

Mosquitoes search for food sources by finding colors that contrast with the horizon during the day. "Dark colors stand out, but light colors are less attractive to them," Dr. Day says.

So those are some ways you can keep yourself protected against mosquito bites this summer. What's your remedy?
