Little Girl's Dream Garden Raises Thousands Of Dollars

The Little Garden That Grew

Delaney Cullen is the youngest grant recipient in the world to receive funds through The Pollination Project (TPP). The project gives six to eight grants within a year to leaders of positive change in the world.

At just six-years-old, Delaney is the youngest person to receive a grant. Impressed by her initiative, the project awarded the little girl $1,000 for her library garden project in Western North Carolina.

With the help of her parents and library staff, Delaney is working hard to realize her dream of starting a garden at her local library. It was her idea to create a space for reading time outside as well as creating wildlife habitats and growing food for people in need.

Find out how it got started on the next page...

The idea seeds for The Little Garden That Grew were planted early in the mind of young Delaney, whose parents are both educators.

They spent a lot of time reading to her and learning about the outdoors, foraging foods and building things. Her father, John Cullen explains that it really was Delaney's own experience that inspired her to want to create the garden:

"We're also firm believers of volunteering for service projects that strengthens the local food economy and education for the lower socioeconomic status," he said,  "So her heart being in the right place and her upbringing are what has inspired this garden. "

As for Delaney, she's got a vision for her garden that includes some of her favorite things: "I really want to plant beets in the garden. I love beets. Everyone else will love them too," she says, "We can just make a garden we can read in and watch animals and feed people too!"

She's being involved in every aspect of this project. We're at a business meeting speaking to the Director of the County libraries. The Little Garden That Grew / Cullen Family

While the garden is still in the planning phase, their idea is gaining traction and donations are slowly pouring in. So far, they have managed to raise $602 of their $5,000 goal. If you would like to support Delaney and her garden, please visit their You Caring page here.
