Why are some of the fans of the original blockbuster Ghostbusters so enraged?
Hollywood has remade the classic blockbuster Ghostbusters and some fans are none too pleased.
Why are they freaking out you ask? First off, the cast is all-female. Comedy heavy-hitters Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig star in the film alongside SNL's Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. What's wrong with that you ask? Exactly. Sounds like plain old chauvinism to me.
Secondly, Egon is gone!
This is something that I can understand getting upset about. His character added charm and nerdiness that went a long way with fanatics of the original franchise. How will the re imagined Ghostbusters manage without his character? Not to mention Bill Murray's unforgettable Dr. Peter Venkman.
Bill Murray fans will be grateful that he appears in a cameo spot as a spiritual debunker. Rumor has it that Dan Akroyd filmed a cameo bit as well.
They have kept Slimer and the awesome Ecto 1 is very similar to the original. So, that's encouraging. But will the revision retain the campy feel with 2016 CGI? (Remember Star Wars went back to puppets for its latest installation).
The ladies' secretary will be played by the drool-worthy heartthrob Chris Hemsworth. It's hard to say if his presence will add to or detract from the film.
The new film has caught criticism for being racist. Leslie Jones' character is the only hero who isn't a scientist. Now that is something to ruffle your feathers.
All being said, the anti-Ghostbusters reboot is really about people wanting to hold on to the original image in their mind. It's how I felt when I saw the latest version of the Cabbage Patch Kid. Not enough to boycott what could be side-splitting or side-sliming entertainment. Ghostbusters hits theaters July 15th.
