If you can't get enough of hit DIY shows like Fixer Upper and and Flip or Flop then you will be excited to hear about the exciting news coming out of Rehab Addict.
The popular show is getting ready for season 8, which premiered on October 4 and we can't help but get excited. Fans can expect the same no nonsense attitude that they love from all their favorite HGTV and DIY network series, with a familiar face.
Nicole Curtis has been the host of Rehab Addict since it first aired in 2010. Her passion for saving old homes in Detroit and Minneapolis is at the heart of her renovation show and what captivates us week after week.
In addition to giving old houses a face-lift, Nicole is a real estate agent.
A surprise pregnancy in late 2014, resulted in her youngest son Harper's birth. After Harper was born, maternity leave wasn't an option for Curtis.
"We had contracts to get through," Curtis explains. "I went from giving birth to filming and building, then we did the Ransom Gillis special in Detroit," which aired between seasons six and seven.
That's when Curtis decided she needed a break. Between the death of her grandmother and an intense custody battle over her toddler, Curtis had a lot on her plate. She became estranged with her parents and things took an ugly turn.
"Our situation is absolutely horrifying and heartbreaking. I can't say anymore to that," said Curtis at the time.
In the year that Rehab Addict has been off the air, Curtis has had a chance to regroup and sort things out with her family. She has become an advocate for single moms, something that she has had experience in since she was 17.
"I would give anything to have a husband that loved me and supported me and, you know, took the kids out for pizza while I designed, but I just have never had that," she says.
Curtis grew up outside of Detroit and left home at 17 to head to college. She and her boyfriend at the time settled in Tampa, where they bought the house that would become the future HGTV star's first renovation. While the relationship didn't work out, it resulted in Curtis's first child, Ethan.
When she was younger, Curtis didn't have much money to spare. She credits this lack of finances to her creativity and getting her into DIY projects.
"I've always decorated very eclectically, partly because I was poor. Being poor makes you very creative. When you have money, you don't have to be creative. I love garage sale finds, I love vintage furniture," she said.
Working odd jobs, while flipping a home on the side, Curtis caught the attention of a production company that pitched her to HGTV. Rehab Addict debuted in October 2010 and we have been hooked ever since.
"There are people who think that all of this came easily," Curtis says of her decision to pen a memoir. "I want them to know I was working for $9.75 an hour at Banana Republic, I was waiting tables, I was cleaning toilets."
She also spent her time off teasing us about what is coming up in this season of the show!
After staining a stair rail at one of the two homes that were featured in the premiere, Curtis ran into a problem.
"This looks dumb, I didn't catch it until I stained that piece," she says, realizing that the new look on the rail doesn't match the nearby windowsill and entryway. "These need to be oak."
She also likes to show off that they have fun while filming.
Nicole also hosts a show with David Bromstad and Josh Temple called Beach Flip.
