America Now Holds the Record for the World's Longest Pizza

As Americans we know our pizza! From the deep-dish of Chicago to the flavor combinations of Hawaii, it's about time that we get some recognition on the world stage for knowing our pie.

The United States now holds the Guinness World Record for longest pizza on planet Earth.

Pizza masters from all across the country gathered at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California to dethrone Italy, the birthplace of pizza, which set a new world record last year for their 1.15 mile pizza.

The California Pizza Pit Crew included Tony Gemignani of Tony's Pizza Napoletana in San Francisco, Giulio Adriani of NYC's Forcella mini-chain, and Jimmy DeSisto of nearby Venice Bakery in Torrance.

The single sheet of dough, sauce and cheese stretched more than 6,330 feet- over a mile in length around the racetrack.

The pizza was cooked by conveyor oven, drew crowds who watched the team shatter the record and celebrated with them afterwards.

Even the little hands pitched in to help make this famous pizza!

Everyone was in good spirits when the award was presented for all their hard work.

"Definitely an amazing feat. We were at the sceda race at the speedway dragstrip and got to watch them make this pizza from our pit. I'd say 99% of it was donated and a few were able to try it. While definitely not the best pizza, at least we were able to say we got a taste of the worlds longest pizza. Great job!!!! It was hard work I'm sure," Michael Agnew wrote on Facebook.

It seems like there's a quick turnover for this particular foodie prize, so I wonder who will try and break the record next?

After 11 hours and 250 pizza chefs working in shifts of 100, Italy completed a 1.15-mile pizza along the Naples coast.

Using wood-burning stoves which was wheeled along the length of the pizza by foot, visitors took complimentary slices of the world-famous pizza and the rest of was donated to people in need.

To complete this pizza it took 2.2 tons of flour, 2.2 tons of mozzarella cheese, 3,527 pounds of tomato sauce, 200 liters of olive oil and 66 pounds of fresh basil. Everything was locally sourced from the Campania region, also known as the "home of pizza", according to Guinness.

It's important to note that, this award is separate from the world's largest pizza, which includes surface area, instead of sheer length.

This pizza looks amazing! I think I need to make a trip back to Italy soon.
