Artist With Alzheimer's Draws Final Heartbreaking Self-Portraits

He was a successful American artist living in London, England.

In 1995, at 61 years old, William Utermohlen received the most devastating diagnosis: he had Alzheimer's disease. There is no known cure for this terrible neurodegenerative disorder - it is the slow and often painful deterioration of the mind.

Rather than despair, Utermohlen resolved to keep a diary of the disease's progression in the form of self-portraits. He kept up his work until 2000 when he was admitted into a nursing home.

His last picture is a haunting testament to the devastation of this disease:
