Astronauts Left Something We Didn't Know About On The Moon: Poop

Youtube

Between 1969 and 1972, the Apollo missions to the moon brought on some of the coolest and most impressive scientific finds that had yet been seen in the 20th Century. Even just knowing that we were able to land on the moon was a massive accomplishment, but getting to see what we were missing on there was even better.

Of course, to bring back samples of moon rocks, dust, and core samples, the Apollo astronauts had to ditch quite a few things from the lunar rover, as space was limited and so was their weight limit. This isn't anything new, as we've already seen plenty of photos of things that were left behind; pieces of spacecraft, golf balls, pairs of boots etc.

However, what a lot of people don't know is that there's more than just little souvenirs and knick-knacks from the Apollo missions lying around on the moon; turns out, the astronauts also left nearly 100 sealed bags of bodily fluids on there...

Anyone who's read about the conditions endured by astronauts while in outer space is probably very much aware of how human waste is disposed of while up there. Specifically, the waste is vacuum-sealed in bags in order to be disposed of later.

Nowadays astronauts are often able to store the waste in hazardous waste disposal units until they can return to Earth (you probably saw this in The Martian), but back in the 70s the procedures weren't quite as in place for something like that. So, of course, they did what anybody would do; they dumped it all on the moon.

Scientists are actually curious about this, as they've begun studying the effects that that extreme temperatures have on everyday things, including human waste. A video was made to detail out exactly what was left behind on the moon.

I had no idea this kinda stuff got left behind on the moon! Did you?
