Two best friends in Georgia have redefined the meaning of "friendship goals" by delivering each other's baby.
Dr. Laquita Martinez and Dr. Jocelyn Slaughter first met in 2008 when the pair began their residency at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.
Their friendship proved to be set for the long haul when Slaughter showed Martinez her unwavering support, when she lost her first child, Ryan in 2014 after just 26 weeks.
"After I lost my child, Jocelyn really showed herself not only as a friend but a sister," Martinez told ABC News. "That was probably one of the most difficult things an OB-GYN could do was bury my own child."
Despite Martinez's heartbreak, she stood by her best friend and delivered Slaughter's baby girl, Janice, in April of the same year.
Fast forward to Oct 6. 2017, Slaughter was finally able to return the favor when she helped deliver Martinez's newborn daughter by caesarean section.
"It was an amazing experience. I was definitely nervous ... just operating on your best friend is a little scary, but I knew that I had to do it," Slaughter told PEOPLE. "I knew that she wanted me to and that I wouldn't want her do it with anybody else."
Slaughter said while it was an honor to deliver Martinez's daughter, Kayla, it was also an emotional experience.
"Afterwards, I walked out of the operating room and started to cry because I was just so happy that I was able to give her her daughter like she gave me my daughter," Slaughter continued.
Martinez shared her best friend's sentiments, and said it's a memory she'll always keep close to her heart.
"After coming off of a high-risk pregnancy and having two prior C-sections, you want to be with someone that you trust," Martinez said. "Someone that you know loves you and has your best interest at heart and wants to see the best for you and your child."
Now pregnant with her second child, Slaughter aspires to keep their tradition alive.
"Because she just had her baby, she probably won't be able to deliver mine," Slaughter said. "But I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she might."
