Boy Sent Home From First Day Of Kindergarten Because Of His Hair

Anyone who has raised a child knows there are just certain things that make them special. For Jessica Oates, her son's desire to not cut his hair makes him who he is.

"He's never had a haircut. It's just kind of a part of his identity," said Oates.

Unfortunately for Oates and her son, the school he's about to attend doesn't feel the same way about who he chooses to be. Barbers Hill in Mont Belvieu Texas sent the kindergarten student home when they saw the 'do he was sporting on the first day of school.

The child's hair is long, yes, but it seems relatively well-kept. It's certainly better than my hair on some days.

Now, Jessica is in a heated battle with the school to get her son back in class, claiming his hair shouldn't be an issue.

"I don't believe that short hair should be required to get an education," said Oates.

But, the school wants to make something clear about Oates and her son.

According to the school, and Oates own admission, she was aware of the school's policy regarding the length of a boy's hair before attending class.

Oates was told at registration that she would need a letter citing cultural or religious reasons as to why she cannot cut her son's hair. Many people were also left wondering the same thing: why not just cut it?

"That's who he is. I don't believe in it. I will not cut his hair," the mom said. "I feel like my son is owed the same education that all other children in this school district have."

But she never wrote that letter, so Oates is now forced to fight with the school to have her son re-instated without getting a haircut first. Oates even tried putting her son's hair in a bun, thus following the rules of "not below the eyebrows or below the top of a t-shirt collar" but that was not an acceptable solution for the school.

As for the school board, they don't seem to have any desire of changing their minds.

The district released a statement which read, "Our local elected Board has established policy based on community expectations, and Barbers Hill administration will continue to implement the said policy."
