Sometimes our eyes play tricks on us and we think "that's definitely not real." And often times we're right. But for lobster fisherman, Wayne Nickerson, his eyes were not deceiving him whatsoever.
Nickerson was out on his boat in Plymouth, Massachusetts when he spotted something unusual in one of his lobster traps. When he got closer, he realized it was a rare blue lobster! It's estimated that just one in two million lobsters is blue, which is caused by a genetic defect that produces an excessive amount of a certain protein. It's a pretty big deal, so obviously he was excited. "He let out a loud exclamation of excitement. He was very clear about how excited he was," said Wayne's wife, Jan Nickerson.
For Wayne Nickerson though, this was his second time catching a blue lobster. The first time was in 1990, according to his wife. That's crazy, when you think about how many lobsters he must have caught in his 35 years of lobster fishing.
The 2lb beauty, appropriately named Bleu, was handled with care and is now being held in a tank until Wayne and Jan can find a local aquarium to take him in. The couple wants people to be able to see and appreciate the rare creature.
