High School students were asked to wear traditional costumes representing their cultural backgrounds for Culture Day.
Some kids went all-out with traditional prints, others, chose a minimalist approach to their attire, but Josh Welch did something that no one expected.
The senior in Maryland dressed up as a thief - representing cultural appropriation.
He posted a picture of his costume to Twitter with this caption:
"Dressed like a thief for culture day bc white people steal everyone else's culture."
Welch tells Mashable that he got the idea from the internet when he was looking for something funny to wear, "the idea just hit me," he says.
Since posting his Tweet, he has received over 52 thousand likes and 30 thousand re-tweets in just two days.
The feedback has been explosive. Although many responses have been supportive:
Many others took offence:
What do you think? Was this appropriate?
