While most of the food that passes through our grocery stores is imported from outside of the country, there has been a marked effort in Pittsburgh, PA to reclaim spaces for local farming practices and community gardens.
The goal of The Hilltop Urban Farm is to feed people with items grown and tended for by neighborhoods for neighborhoods.
On the menu for their first season are winter peas, corn, potatoes, cabbage and other food local to Pennsylvania. There are also plans to install a fruit orchard and eventually walking trails for people to admire the natural space.
Set to open in 2019, the city hopes this project inspires people to look local for their meals and give youth a skills-building program that reconnects them with their community.
