The funnyman, who has previously starred in shows like The Good Life, Whose Line Is It Anyway?, The Simpsons, and of course, The Drew Carey Show, has recently cast in a guest role that's a departure from the characters we're used to seeing him portray.

The showrunners, Frank Cardea and George Schenck released a statement following the news of Carey's upcoming stint on the show:

"With the casting of John Ross, a retired Marine, we needed an actor who could play the outgoing, passionate side of the character but also the dark reality that he is still haunted from being a prisoner of war for many years," the co-showrunners explained.

So what exactly will Carey's character bring to the table and when will the episode air?

Carey will be playing the role of a retired Marine Sergeant named John Ross, who sends care packages to active-duty servicemen. In a twist of events, Ross suddenly becomes the main suspect of a murder investigation after cookies laced with cyanide were found in one of the packages he sent.

In a bid to clear his name, Ross, who is described as a "loyal and honorable" veteran teams up with the Harmon's Gibbs and the rest of the NCIS team to find the real killer.

"We are thrilled to have Drew Carey, who served in the Marine Reserves, as a Marine portray this complex role and look forward to fans seeing him in this powerful and heart-warming episode," Cardea and Schenck said.

This role hits close to home for Carey because, like the statement mentioned, he served in the Marine Corps for six years, from 1980 to 1986.
