Everyone was super excited when they announced Emma Watson as the lead in Beauty and the Beast. She is probably the most perfect person (that exists in this non-cartoon world) who could portray Belle. The 1991 cartoon version of Belle was book-smart and brave, two qualities that can also be said of Emma Watson herself.
Emma was happy to jump into that classic yellow ball gown, but she did make one request to Disney when she signed on.
Don't worry, it is a good development! The feminist spokesperson wanted her character to give her character even more of a backstory that is actually an awesome idea.
'In the animated movie, it's her father who is the inventor, and we actually co-opted that for Belle." - Emma Watson
It makes SO much sense if you think about it! Emma is the first to point it out the fact that it's strange that Belle just doesn't fit in because of her love of reading.
"I was like, 'Well, there was never very much information or detail at the beginning of the story as to why Belle didn't fit in, other than she liked books. Also what is she doing with her time?'" - Emma Watson
They ended up giving Belle a much richer back story. Instead of just being around to help her dad, she is actually making the machines herself. Watson even let us know what it was Belle invented.
"So, we created a backstory for her, which was that she had invented a kind of washing machine, so that, instead of doing laundry, she could sit and use that time to read instead. So, yeah, we made Belle an inventor," - Emma Watson
This information comes after some new stills from the movie were released, finally giving us a look at Watson as Belle as well as the Beast. Check them out below!
The film comes out on March 16, 2017. Are you excited to see it?
