If you had a million dollars, what would you do with it?
Most people will think of something they want to buy, pay off some debts, maybe give some to family, and then donate some to charity.
But Wang Yan, a 29-year-old man from China did something few people would think of.
He spent his life's earnings to save the lives of dogs who were about to be slaughtered.
It all started when Wang Yan lost his own dog. He searched everywhere, including slaughterhouses, to try and find his beloved pet.
"I went looking everywhere, but all to no avail," Yan remembers, according to The Shanghaiist. "Finally someone let me go into the slaughterhouse to try my luck there."
Unfortunately, Yan had no luck. But when he saw all those poor dogs at the slaughterhouses, he knew something had to be done. The dogs in the slaughterhouse were not only being sentenced to death, but they were being treated like dirt while they were there.
Yan had a net worth of several million Chinese Yuan, so he did something incredible: he bought the slaughterhouse, rescued the dogs, and built a shelter for them.
Currently, the shelter houses 215 dogs. But his generosity has saved many more lives.
"Right now, we only have 215 dogs," he said. "The most we've had at one time is 1,000, many of them have been adopted."
Even though he's in debt now, Wang Yan has no intentions of shutting it down. He continues to feed and take care of all the dogs that pass through. Right now, Wang Yan is teaching himself veterinary basic and experiments on himself to see if his methods work.
Wang Yan refuses any monetary donations that come his way, and only ever requests food, water, and other supplies to help care for all the dogs.
Since news of Wang Yan's incredible act of kindness has gone viral, he has received offers from so many others to help him out on his mission. One local pet shop owner called him, saying he would like to de-worm and bathe all the dogs at the shelter for free!
Wang Yan's shelter also provides medical services to dogs that have owners. In return, donations are made to help the dogs still at the shelter.
It is so refreshing to see someone using their fortune to benefit defenseless animals who would otherwise be sold as meat, all because they do not have home!
Thank you, Wang Yan, for being so selfless in your actions!
