Hero Golden Retriever Saves Baby Deer From Drowning In Amazing Rescue

A New York man and his two dogs were walking along the shore of Long Island Sound when they spotted something floating in the water.

As Mark Freely and his English golden retriever, Storm, got closer realized that an exhausted baby deer was struggling to keep its head above the chilly waters.

What happened next was such a surprise to Freely that he began recording Storm's unusual behavior. You see, although he is a retriever, this friendly pup has never actually retrieved anything in his life - until now.

"Storm just plunged into the water and started swimming out to the fawn, grabbed it by the neck, and started swimming to shore," Freeley said to CBS2.

The owner and his other dog watched with excitement as Storm the hero swam back to shore with the terrified fawn.

Freely encouraged Storm as the brave pup swam back with the tired baby. When they reached the shore, the weakened deer began to run away, but collapsed from exhaustion. Storm followed the little one and began to nudge it.

"He started nudging it with his nose and started pulling it to make sure she was gonna be OK," Freeley said.

He called animal experts to the scene, but when they arrived, Freely watched as the disoriented deer raced back into the water.

"This time it went out even further," Freeley said.

Together with a representative from Strong Island Animal Rescue, Freely waded into the water to save the confused baby a second time. Although the fawn was covered in ticks and suffering from an eye injury it will be well looked after at a nearby animal care shelter.
