Dogs are man's best friend. And this dog was man's hero.
Leo the black lab was brought in following Italy's devastating 6.2 magnitude earthquake. He's a part of the search and rescue team of Pescara del Tronto, a village that was destroyed by the quake. The team was told that there was a girl potentially trapped under her collapsed two-story house. They arrived on scene and in less than 40 seconds, Leo found tracked the scent of eight-year-old Georgia. With the help of firemen, the rescue team dug with their hands for nine hours to find the girl, who had been trapped for 16 hours prior to that.
More than 5,000 people are currently involved in the rescue effort, with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi pledging more than $56 million USD to help rebuild the country.
Stay strong, Italy.
