Looking back at the styles of the 1960s, it's easy to see unoriginal bouffants with too much hairspray.
But the effort that went into those hairstyles was, to be frank, an overall time consumer.
Once the husbands were at work and the kids were at school, wives and mothers would head to the beauty salon for an hour or more of girl talk, primping, and relaxation. There was a level of camaraderie between women. A mutual respect for the effort going into their beauty.
More often than not, women would leave looking the same way they entered. Just a little more perky. But that was the whole point.
