A waitress in Northern Virginia was a victim of blatant racism at her job over the weekend.
The waitress, Kelly, was stunned when she went to collect her tip off the table of a couple who had just left. Instead of a tip, the couple had left her an astonishingly racist comment on the bottom of the receipt.
The patrons, 20-something white couple, signed the bill and left quickly (probably because they didn't want to deal with the inevitable backlash of their words.)
This was the note:
"GREAT SERVICE. DON'T TIP BLACK PEOPLE" reads the note.
"It's just appalling, disheartening, outrageous - all of the above," said owner Tom Tellez. He says in 42 years with the restaurant chain, he has never seen this type of racism.
"She has a following," he said. "Her philosophy for customer service is way beyond the norm. And we're really happy to have her."
Tellez says Kelly has an incredible work ethic and is always dedicated to great customer service. She said she recognized the customers and that they seemed to enjoy the service. Tellez says Kelly is also willing to serve them again if they come back.
The Loundon County NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) tweeted a picture of the receipt saying, "Hatred will not be tolerated and we will not keep quiet. This has been confirmed and did happen per [manager] @ Anita's in Ashburn."
It's sad to think that in this day and age, blatant racism still exists in our society.
