Happy International Sloth Day! The lovable creatures gets to celebrate their special day by doing what they do best: next to nothing. These lazy mammals are perhaps one of the most relatable beings on the face of this earth - at least to me - given the fact that they are known for their extremely slow-moving speed. Here are 10 facts that you should know about sloths so you can celebrate them to the fullest extent they deserve!

They may move slow, but that doesn't mean they are always asleep

They only sleep for about ten hours a day. That isn't even that much when you think about it! The average dog sleeps about 12-14 hours a day.

They take their time to mosey along

How slow can you go? These little buddies have an average speed of 2 meters per minute on the ground and 3 meters per minute in a tree.

Sloths spend most of their time in tree

They only come down about once a week so they can go to the washroom.

Their sluggish behavior helps them hide from predators

They are hunted by eagles, snakes and jaguars so by moving slowly they might be able to draw less attention to themselves.

Algae grows on their fur to help camouflage the sloths

It turns the coat green so they will blend into the trees better. It also provides nutrition for some insects that often end up living on them like cockroaches and beetles.

They can be loud when they want to

Even though they stay by themselves most of their lives, when they want to mate the females will scream so loud that it can be heard for 700 meters.

They can actually travel three times as fast in water than they do on land. Maybe because their ancestor Thalassaocnus was actually in the water the majority of the time.

Their grip is so good that some of them continue to hold on for a while after they die.

You wouldn't want to go head-to-head in a chin-up competition - they would win for sure.

Baby sloths will cling to their mothers for weeks

If they are being raised in captivity they need to have a little replacement to snuggle with.

And most importantly: Sloths are graceful and majestic creatures.
