Michelle Obama Shares Her Famous Apple Cobbler Recipe And It'll Make Your Mouth Water

Michelle Obama may no longer be the First Lady of the United States, but she's still making headlines for her work as a philanthropist and advocate for social issues like children's health and gender equality.

However, when she's not busy delivering speeches and attending fundraisers, she's in her kitchen cooking up a storm. Her best dish? Apple Cobbler.

Over the years, the former FLOTUS has perfected her recipe for the classic dessert, which was first shared in Yankee Magazine.

"I've been making this cobbler for a long time, so I usually just eyeball how much needs to go in," said Obama. "People might want more or less sugar, but this is how our family and friends like it. This recipe makes one cobbler, which is like a double pie."

Although the final result differs slightly from the traditional cobbler, which usually has a biscuit topping, this recipe is delicious enough to disguise itself as one.

The recipe calls for sliced Granny Smith apples tossed in a mixture of brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. If you're already thinking of whipping this dessert up, keep in mind that Obama recommends letting the seasoned apples sit in the fridge overnight so the spices can get into the fruit.

The rest of the recipe requires a little bit of patience because it involves a few layers, but once you make it past that step, you're golden.

Grab your apron, mixing bowls and rolling pin and get started on the recipe.

Here's how you can recreate Obama's famous apple cobbler in your own kitchen:

Ingredients

Filling

  • 8 Granny Smith apples, peeled and sliced [or a bag of frozen peeled apples]
  • 1-1/2 to 2 cups of brown sugar
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup white flour

Crust

  • 3 sheets refrigerated pie crust
  • 1 stick of butter

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees then butter and flour the bottom of a large baking dish.
  2. Roll out three pie crusts as thin as possible and layer the bottom of the pan with 1-1/2 of the pie crusts.
  3. Prick a few holes in the crust then pour the apple mixture into the pan. D
  4. Dot 3/4 of a stick of butter around the apples.
  5. Use the remaining 1-1/2 pie crusts to cover the apple mixture entirely, letting it overlap the pan.
  6. Pinch the edges of the dough around the sides of the pan so the mixture is completely covered.
  7. Melt final 1/4 stick of butter and brush all over top of crust.
  8. Reduce the oven temperature to 300 degrees and continue bake at that temperature for around 3 hours. Check the oven around the 2.5 hour mark to make sure it isn't burning.
  9. Remove from oven and cool for a few minutes before serving warm or cold.

If you're concerned about the cooking time, Obama says don't worry, baking the treat at a lower temperature for a longer time is what "makes the crust flaky," which is apparently how the former POTUS likes it.

She suggests that you put the cobbler in the oven then "go for a walk, go to the store, or do whatever you have to do around the house."

So there you have it, an apple cobbler recipe fit for a president that could be the star of your next holiday get together.
