Miracle Surgery Separates Twin Babies Joined At The Head

Anias and Jadon McDonald were born on September 9, 2015. They were normal little babies, beautiful little boys. The only thing different about them, they were conjoined at the head.

Their miracle separation was the seventh craniopagus surgery led by Dr. James Goodrich, and only the 59th of such surgeries in the world since 1952. The boys were successfully separated early in the morning, on Friday, October 14 at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, New York.

According to CNN's coverage, their separation surgery took a total of 16 hours and was divided into several short-stage surgeries. These sweet babies had already undergone three operations that progressively separated their brains. The fourth, and final, stage of separation was completed with one final snip at 2:11 a.m.

Although the separation was a success, both boys are being monitored closely as they recover. Jadon was the first to complete his surgeries and reunite with his anxious parents.

Their mother, Nicole McDonald, has been keeping friends, family and supporters informed of her sons' progress on Facebook. It is obvious that she is both overwhelmed and overjoyed, for now, all they can do is pray:

"The overall atmosphere was one of celebration mixed with uncertainty," she wrote, "Anias really got rocked in this procedure. It really now is up to God in terms of how he recovers. I was barely able to even utter the words "thank you" because of the pit that still sits heavy in my stomach. We are standing on the brink of a vast unknown. "

"I keep picturing Anias smiling behind his right middle finger in his mouth. Twenty four hours ago he was so rambunctious...full of life. God please give me my baby back."

"So we just took a huge leap of faith, but now we are back to taking baby steps. In fact, I'm pretty sure I'm still frozen in space and time...in the smiles of yesterday morning. I'll be hanging out there until I see those smiles again," wrote Nicole.

At the time of this posting, baby Anias is still in surgery and little Jadon is recovering. Send your prayers to these adorable little boys and their family, they still have a long road to walk.

Donations from across the country and around the world have been pouring in for the family in need. So far, over 2,000 people have contributed more than $143,000 USD. If you would like to donate the their medical expenses and recovery, visit the family's GoFundMe page for more details.
