Even after being declared dead in 2008, people were still suspicious of his disappearance.
In 2009, investigators on Dateline NBC claimed McDermott disappeared to avoid debts, including $8,000 he allegedly owed to his ex-wife for child support.
He also disappeared shortly after filing for bankruptcy, having unpaid debts totaling more than $30,000 at the time.
They later believed that he was living on a boat off the west coast of Mexico. They claimed that Patrick now had a new passport and was living under his birth name of Patrick Kim.
Kim reportedly had withdrawn his life savings from two bank accounts before he left.
Evidence from an Australian magazine revealed that McDermott is alive: they received photos which show a man who matches his description in Mexico, along with a woman.
"The widow's peak is exact. The eyes are very similar and the ears extend down on the head the same distance. I believe it is him,” private detective Charlie Parker told the magazine.
Parker claimed that the individual in the photograph was a “90 per cent match” to McDermott.
"It's rumored he was with a German national. I spoke to people there. The girl he was travelling with was described as having a German accent," investigator John Nazarian said.
In March 2016, McDermott appeared on America's Most Wanted and was then reported to have been found living in Mexico.
