Professor Fired After Saying Otto Warmbier 'Got What He Deserved'

It's a story that has left people stunned across the world.

Otto Warmbier was on a school trip in North Korea in January of 2016. He was accused of stealing a propaganda poster and sentenced to 15 years of hard labor. Two months after Warmbier was put in a North Korean prison, he suffered a severe brain injury and fell into a coma. North Korean authorities claim this was as a result of botulism and a sleeping pill, though U.S. physicians found no evidence of this.

In June of 2017, Warmbier was released to the United States, still in a coma, after nearly 18 months of captivity.

It was wildly speculated that Otto Warmbier was beaten, tortured, and potentially poisoned while imprisoned. Six days after his return to the United States, Otto Warmbier died.

President Trump released a statement, saying "There is nothing more tragic for a parent than to lose a child in the prime of life. Our thoughts and prayers are with Otto's family and friends, and all who loved him."

Most of the reactions from the public were sympathetic and angry that Warmbier was detained and potentially tortured.

However, a part-time professor at the University of Delaware had a different opinion, one which ended up getting her fired from her position.

Anthropology teacher Katherine Dettwyler had the following to say after Warmbier's death:

The University of Delaware released the following statement regarding Dettwyler's comments:

"We condemn any and all messages that endorse hate and convey insensitivity toward a tragic event such as the one that Otto Warmbier and his family suffered. The University of Delaware values respect and civility and we are committed to global education and study abroad; therefore we find these comments particularly distressing and inconsistent with our values. Our sympathies are with the Warmbier family."

According to the University of Delaware, Katherine Dettwyler was not employed by them at the time of her comments, but they will not be renewing her contract in the future.
