Panera Bread Employee Fired After Shaming a Customer Over Special Request

There's no doubt that working in retail can often be stressful. After all, you're handling dozens of customers from all walks of life every day, some of whom can be frustrating to deal with.

Despite it all, employees are advised to follow the unwritten rule that the "customer is always right," and avoid confrontations as much as possible, even when provoked.

A former Panera Bread employee from Druid Hills, GA didn't seem to have gotten the memo and took it a little too far when she lost her cool while serving a customer.

20-year-old Toriana landed herself in hot water after a customer named Karensa Harris accused her of insulting her and the proof is on the receipt.

Harris told WSB-TV that she stopped by the restaurant to grab a salad on the way to pick up her son when the incident took place.

According to the furious customer, she asked Toriana to substitute watermelon for another ingredient on the salad, but when she saw the receipt there was a note that read "Add watermelon for this stupid b**ch."

"I was floored," Harris told WSB-TV. "What are your morals? What does Panera Bread stand for?"

After the initial shock, an angry Harris spoke to the manager who reassured her that he will have a talk with the cashier and offered to remake her salad. Harris, however, wasn't about to let it go.

She called the coporate office immediately after leaving the store to file a formal complaint.

"The response that I got from them just didn't feel like they felt like it was a big deal," she told the local news station.

Frustrated, she took to Facebook to write about her experience and it wasn't long before Panera officials responded.

"At Panera, we have a zero tolerance policy for this kind of behavior and the associate has been terminated as a result of this situation.  We are focused on fostering a warm and welcoming environment for everyone, and this incident is not indicative of the way that we treat our guests," read the statement to WSB-TV.

"I feel like if I didn't use social media as my platform. I don't feel like I would have been heard," Harris said.

Toriana has since been fired from her position and while Harris is satisfied with the end result, she says she won't be returning to the restaurant.

The disgraced cashier spoke to the news station to share her side of the story.

"She said, 'Do you understand? Are you stupid?'" Toriana told the reporter. "At that point, I felt like, 'OK, I'm not stupid. I'm not incompetent. I'm new, and I didn't know how to provide her the things she wanted, the way she wanted them.'"

Toriana later told the station that Panera shouldn't be judged because of her actions and she regrets having acted the way she did.

"I do not want to represent Panera that way. That is not the way they trained me. I'm not that way," she said. "There is no excuse to write that on a ticket."
