Contouring has been all the rage for a few years now. I'm not sure if we should blame the Kardashians, but it seems like the logical choice. The perfect cheekbones and an angular jaw have quickly become the new goal for many women, and the makeup world has been happily supplying us with a wide range of products for every price point to achieve this look. People have started to take it one step further, using Botox injections to actually change their face shape.
People have started getting Botox injections to help slim down their jaw lines. It is a newer technique that is still considered an "off-label" use of Botox called "Masseter Muscle Injection". By targeting the masseter muscles that control the chewing, grinding and clenching motions your face does, the muscles are able to relax and thin out. Dr. Joshua Zeichner, director of cosmetic and clinical research at Mount Sinai Medical Center claims that "By injecting a small amount of Botox into the muscle along your jawline, you can actually relax the muscle until it thins out and appears smaller," says Ziechner. "It's basically a vacation for your muscles." Who knew that your face muscles could need a vacation.
Dr. Zeichner explained why having a slimmer jaw might trick people into thinking you are younger, "Young faces tend to be widest near the eye line and narrowest at the jaw and chin," says Zeichner. "But as we age, our faces square off, or grow wider at the jawline. So by slimming the jawline, you're naturally going to appear younger."
Botox isn't going to last forever though, you will get about 5 months of this contoured look and you need to be really careful when choosing who does the procedure. Apparently if the doctor doesn't to it right they can cause your jaw muscles to actually weaken and atrophy and then goodbye solid foods!
If you are interested in getting this semi-permanent contouring done, please make sure you do your research first. While the before and after photos online always look amazing, sometimes it might just be easier to buy a new bronzer and watch some YouTube contouring videos. Or better yet invest in Photoshop to edit those pictures to perfection. That's what the Kardashians do. If you are curious on how the process actually gets done watch this video and see. It doesn't seem to take long but I will let you be the judge of the results.
