Police Officers Step Up on First Day of School for Son of Fallen Officer

Are you ready for a good cry? The Amarillo Police Department in Texas has stolen the hearts of people all over the world.

After losing fellow officer, Justin Scherlen, in a crash on duty, the department did not want to leave his young son, Jackson, without support on his first day of school. Jackson was welcomed at the school by a huge group of his dad's coworkers and police family.

"I think Jackson really enjoyed having everyone here. Just to know that he's still loved by the blue family and that they still care. Emotionally, it's awesome to see," said Jessica Scherlen, Jackson's mom.

Jackson was surrounded by support and family on his first day of pre-K, and definitely had no shortage of hugs.

All of the officers were more than happy to be there for Jackson. They come for a brotherhood and sisterhood of police officers, knowing just how quickly you can lose someone on the job.

"I'd give it all back just to have Justin here with his son," said Officer Daniel Smith. "At least we can be here for him and let Jackson know that he always has someone to call on."
