There's Now A 'Netflix' For Seeing Movies In Theaters, And It's Only $10 A Month

If you charge yourself $9 for popcorn at home just to recreate the movie theater experience, we have good news.

While new subscription services for watching movies like Netflix allow you to stream movies from the comfort of your own home, there are still dedicated movie buffs who love to watch the latest releases on the big screen. A new service will save you lots of money if you're one of those dedicated film fans.

MoviePass is a subscription service that lets you see 1 movie in theaters every day, 365 days a year, for a monthly fee. While the company has been around since 2011, until recently a subscription would cost you as much as $50. That meant MoviePass was only worthwhile if you were seeing at least 5 flicks per month.

But now the company has lowered their fee to just $10 a month, attracting more than 100,000 subscribers since the price change in July. The company admits they're losing money with so many new subscribers, but of course there's a catch that could pay them back in the long run.

But before you sign up for MoviePass there's a few things you should know about the company: for one thing the deal doesn't apply to 3D or Imax screenings, and while MoviePass brags that "91%" of theaters in America are included, most smaller local theatres don't take MoviePass.

So how does this deal work, and where can you get it?

The trick that makes a MoviePass subscription so cheap is that the company buys tickets in bulk, then passes the savings onto you.

Each user is given a high-tech debit card, which automatically covers the cost of a single ticket at a qualifying theater each day. About 50% of people see just 3-6 movies in theaters each year, so MoviePass is counting on you to forget about the deal after a few months.

But despite the catches and restrictions, MoviePass could still be a good deal. Ticket prices are only expected to go up, up, up in the next few years, so it might be smart to sign up now while the discounted rate is still on the table. Although, if you take a date to the theater you would each need to have a subscription with the company (there's no sharing).

So what does MoviePass get out of your subscription if they're losing so much money? The card they issue you collects data about how often you watch movies and what you go see. MoviePass hopes to bank on that information, which could let film studios and theaters serve you better in the future.
