When Ashley Kaila Bartyik, took this picture of her grandparents, "Opi" Wolf Gottschalk, 83 and "Omi" Anita, 81, she was fed up.
For 62 years, they did everything together. But, for the past 8 months, they have been separated because of horrible backlogs and delays in the healthcare system. Ashley posted the picture on August 23, the day her Opi was diagnosed with Lymphoma.
Her grandfather is stuck in healthcare limbo - waiting at Yale Road Centre, transitional facility in Surrey, BC, Canada. Her grandmother has already been moved to a long-term care facility and the family has been struggling to reunite the couple.
This sweet couple cry every time they see each other and Ashley has had enough of the heartbreak. The family is concerned that, if they continue to live apart much longer, Wolf's Dementia will worsen to the point that he forgets Anita forever. The strain on her family has begun to take it's toll and the news of his cancer has increased the urgency of their fight to join the couple.
Her grandfather hasn't walked in 8 months, and Ashley is so worried that he isn't getting the proper care - including physical therapy. In her desperate plea, she says the family has done everything they could - contacting their local MLA, Fraser Health, with no response. In a last-ditch effort, she reached out to social media for help.
"We want justice for my grandparents who after 62 years together deserve to spend their last moments in the same building. Please share this and tag anyone that needs to see this post to get the help we need! @fraserhealthauthority," she writes.
Although Fraser Health tells news agencies that they are working closely with the family, Ashley clarifies that this is not the case:
