His name is Konsta Punkka, but he is better known as The Squirrel Whisperer. At just 22 years old, his breathtaking nature photography captures the unique emotion and character of his wild subjects.
Konsta walks and waits for hours through the forests near Helsinke, Finland to find the perfect shot. "It often take a while, maybe a few hours before I get the first good shots," he says. Konsta comes armed with his photography gear, nuts and seeds. In his smartphone video tutorial, he sprinkles some seeds into his hands and little chickadees flutter down for a snack. "It often takes about ten minutes for the first animal to take the peanut, then the others trust him and come."
Konsta has been returning to the same places for months to build up trust and to learn the animals' habits. "I had a place where I took photos of foxes for four months," he writes, "so, at first it was a lot of work. Later, I just walked in the area and could (take) shots immediately."
The young photographer has a deep respect for the natural environment and the animals living in it, that's why he doesn't reveal the locations of his spectacular shots. "I never want to tell the places where I take the shots, because if they get too popular, the areas might get too crowded and then the (health) of the animals might not be that good either," he tells viewers, "I always go the animals health at first, then I take the pictures if I can."
Konsta's Instagram images are stunning works of art that easily earn over 50 thousand likes in less than a week. His Facebook following is at over 140 thousand people and it's clear to see why: the beautiful composition, the dreamy colors all enhance the perfect moment when we find ourselves staring right back into the eyes of nature.
