When rescuers came to the house of an Alzheimer's patient they weren't expecting to find a cat like Hidey.
A distant relative of the elderly patient, Paul Russel, came to the property to retrieve the pets. He was only expecting to find one cat, but when someone told him that there was another, he started to search.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a "huge creature" dart from under the bed and run into the cellar. He followed her down and was shocked to see the terrified cat, hiding in a corner, covered in long dreadlocks.
It's a miracle that Hidey was able to move as quickly as she did beneath all of this matted fur!
Although this is an extreme case, it can be difficult for overweight cats to properly groom themselves, so mats form in the hard to reach places.
Groomers carefully removed the mats after sedating Hidey. It was a long process, but they report that Hidey is feeling better and recovering in the care of her former owner's distant relative.
Some fans of the rescue center's Facebook page find it hard to believe that something like this could be real - others are calling it a fake! Truly, this did happen to poor Hidey.
Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Center reminds everyone to check on the elderly in their community and to also check on their animals.
