It's official, world peace is getting closer, I can feel it. What is the biggest obstacle to creating common ground with another human? Language. If we can't understand eachother, how are we going to solve the big problems like poverty, war?
But, let's be real, what we actually want to know is how do we talk with monsieur or mademoiselle Je Ne Sais Quoi? Sure, body language will get us dinner, but there's only so much eye-batting and smiling a girl can do over baguettes and cheese.
Introducing: Pilot, an earpiece that takes all the trouble out of translating.
Waverly Labs has figured out a way to combine speech recognition, machine translation and wearable technology into an earbud that translates your conversation in real-time. When one person speaks, the other can hear it in their own language.
Finally! When that French cutie whispers sweet nothings in your ear, you'll know exactly what they're saying!
Like a hearing aid, but better
The earbuds are designed to fit inside the curves of your ear. The technology links up with an app on your smartphone which switches between language, uploads them to the earpiece and even works as a phrasebook.
The first version will be available in May 2017 and comes with 5 languages: English, Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese. New language groups will be available between Summer and Fall 2017.
Plus, it comes in three colors; red, white and black, so you can coordinate your look.
I want one, how do I get it?
The project already has 12,137 backers and InDemand orders have reached 12 000 units. As of June 25, 2016, over $2 million have been raised for the campaign. Check out their Indiegogo campaign here to be one of the first users. The system comes with two ear pieces, a charger and a mobile app. We'll have to wait until May 2017 before we can use them; but that's OK, we'll pass the time by planning our trip to France!
