Unfortunately, seeing trash on the side of the road is not unusual. But seeing moving trash? That's not something you see every day.
Malissa Sergent Lewis, who works at an elementary school in Kentucky, decided to take a short cut on her way in because she was running late. Her decision ended up saving a life. As Lewis was driving down a country street, she saw a trash bag on the side of the road.
"I saw this trash bag in the road, and I thought to myself, 'Did I just see that bag move?' The closer I got, I realized it was moving. Something was alive in that bag, and I just knew I had to get whatever it was out," she told The Dodo.
Lewis approached the bag cautiously, realizing it could be anything in the bag. She peeked in through a small hole and she was absolutely shocked.
A PUPPY! The little guy had a collar and everything. Once he saw Lewis, his tail started wagging and she knew he would be okay. Either someone stole the little guy and dumped him on purpose, or the owners decided they didn't want him anymore. Regardless, she knew she had to help. Lewis took the dog home with her and got him checked out by the vet where he was given a clean bill of health.
Authorities are looking in to the case, which is undoubtedly an act of animal cruelty. For now though, the little puppy has a home. And since the odds of someone stepping up to claim him are slim, Lewis and her family and ready for the little guy to be a permanent part of their family.
As for a name, they decided to pay homage to his discovery: Hefty.
