Woman Gives Birth Following High Speed Car Chase

A South Carolina woman gave birth to a baby girl on New Years Day, after she and her partner were involved in a high speed police chase.

The police rang their sirens at Carl Alewine and Tiffani Von Glahnon while they were on their way to Charleston's MUSC hospital in the early hours of the morning.

"When the one cop hit his lights behind us, I thought, 'I could stop, but my wife is screaming that the baby is almost here,'" Alewine told WCBD.

However, before the couple could make it to the hospital, police managed to pull them over, and their daughter, Anastasia, was born on the interstate, three weeks premature.

Alewine and Von Glahnon explained to authorities they were going close to 90 miles per hour, as they were alerted there could be potential complications due to her high-risk pregnancy, and were afraid they wouldn't have made it to the medical center in time.

"Our doctors told us that she would not be able to have a natural birth because of her size and weight, and how our daughter was positioned. So I just kept going," Alewine said.

"I look back and there's like 20 police cars, and they had the exits blocked off and everything. Eventually it got to where they had to box us in to stop us," Von Glahnon added.

When law enforcement caught up to the couple's car, they promptly handcuffed Alewine as a precaution before they found out the reason behind his accelerated driving.

According to Von Glahnon, they often hear excuses of fake labors.

"They ended up putting him in handcuffs, just for safety reasons, because they were saying there are people out there that will fake having a pregnant wife," said Vohn Glahn.

While there were no doctors in sight, the couple had help from plenty of police officers to welcome the healthy 6 pounds 2 ounces newborn into the world.

"I'm sitting there, watching her born on the hood of the car, fireworks going off in the background because it's New Year's," Alewine said. "And then they let me out of handcuffs and the cops started clapping and congratulating us."
