The killer whale affectionately known as Granny is believed to be dead after going missing.
The killer whale was 105 years old, born even before the ill-fated Titanic voyage. Researchers have been studying Granny since 1971 when they estimated she was about 60 years old. Her age stunned the scientists, because killer whales in the wild only live to between 60 and 80 years old.
Granny was very distinctive due to the markings on her dorsal fin. Dr Ken Balcomb, one of the leading orca experts in the world, wrote that he last saw Granny on October 12, 2016.
"Perhaps other dedicated whale-watchers have seen her since then,' he wrote. "But by year's end she is officially missing from the Southern Resident Killer Whale population, and with regret we now consider her deceased."
Rest in peace, Granny.
