It may be hard to believe, but tanukis (or raccoon dogs) have no actual relation to raccoons at all! In fact, they are part of the Canidae family, which includes wolves and foxes.
Tanukis aren't technically dogs either. They're more just a species of mammals. But many refer to them as raccoon dogs due to their appearance and behaviors. Of course, as with any wild animal, you're taking a risk by having one as a pet. They aren't the same as having a pug or a chihuahua. But gosh darn it, they are cute.
There's a lot of history behind these tanukis, mainly stemming from Japanese folklore, claiming that tanukis are actually shapeshifters.
Regardless of what they are. We can all agree tanukis are friggin' adorable and we want one.
