Moments Before This Patient Passed Away, The Voice Of Her "Angel" Brought Her To Tears

News Channel 5

A Nashville nurse is being praised as an "angel" after she sung a dying cancer patient's favourite song.

Olivia Neufleder, a nurse at Vanderbilt University Medical Center is seen in videos comforting Margaret Smith by singing her favourite song, Dancing in the Sky by Dani and Lizzy.

Smith, 63, had recently been admitted to the hospital following a rapid decline in health. She had been battling liver cancer for a year when doctors told her she was too weak to survive a liver transplant.

In an interview with News Channel 5, Neufleder said she sang Smith's favourite song to bring her peace in her final moments.

"There was almost a sense of peace knowing that it was her favorite song and she did tell me it's the song she wants played at her funeral," she said.

"She didn't feel like a patient at that time. I wanted her to know that she was loved even if her family wasn't able to be there. I recently lost my grandmother and went through a similar experience and I was singing to her as she passed too," Neufleder said.

Neufelder said Smith would call her her little "angel," as she would sing to Smith everyday during her stay to keep her in good spirits.

"I recently lost my grandmother and went through a similar experience and I was singing to her as she passed too. Margaret really has helped me more than she knows," Neufelder explained.

Vanderbilt nurse Olivia. Is the best nurse ever. A God fearing Younge Lady that takes time to care and love her patients. The best example of what a nurse should be. Thank you .,Olivia, Margaret just loves you!!!thank you for staying hours with her when we couldn't be there!!!

Crystal Hamilton Roberts, a friend of Smith, posted the heartbreaking videos on Facebook, sharing Smith's final moments and adding a silver lining during her grief.

"This is another Video of the Greatest and sweetest Nurse ever. Ms Olivia, she would sing this to Margaret when ever Margaret asked her. Never would Olivia ever say give me a minute, I would but I don't have time. If all nurses would take the time and Care for patients like Ms. Olivia I believe we would see a lot more healing!!!!! The definition of a nurse to our family would be Olivia.......," Roberts wrote.
