A Mother Fired Back After A TV Host Picked On Her Autistic Son

Last week Vice President Pence held a special event honoring military families, which isn't the sort of thing that usually attracts controversy. But near the end of his speech, Pence got a little too animated and bumped his arm against a 10-year-old boy in the crowd behind him.

You might remember this, the moment went viral last week because the little boy, Michael Herrera-Yee, "demanded" an apology from the vice president.

Most people seemed to think the moment was cute and silly, and Pence certainly wasn't upset, but that didn't stop Fox host Tammy Bruce from singling the boy out.

During last Friday's episode of Tucker Carlson Tonight, Bruce used the clip to launch into a bizarre rant about "snowflake" children, while her co-host criticized Michael's parents for teaching their child to insist on an apology.

"I guess we're giving birth to snowflakes now," Bruce said, "because that looked like the kid needed a safe space in that room."

But according to Dr. Ingrid Herrera-Yee, Michael's mother, they have no idea what they're talking about. This week she shared a special message with the hosts that everyone needs to hear.

Dr. Herrera-Yee appeared on CNN's The Lead with Jake Tapper to set the record straight about her son and his behavior.

She's a mother of 3 who won a "spouse of the year" award from the National Guard, so it's safe to say she knows a thing or two about parenting.

She revealed the Michael is on the autism spectrum, saying that he wouldn't even speak before age 5. Yes, she says, that means she's rehearsed some social interactions with him.

But according to her, that's no excuse to pick on him on national TV.

"I was devastated when I saw what they were saying," she told Tapper.

"They didn't even know his age - they didn't know who he was."

She says that Michael enjoyed his visit to the White House and vice president Pence handled the situation perfectly, but she was horrified to see the TV hosts picking on her child.

"Michael is 10 years-old. He is on the autism spectrum. He's a military child. And he loves the White House," she said.

Dr. Herrera-Yee ended the interview with a request to other news anchors:

"Please don't use kids. Whether they're typically developing kids "” it doesn't matter that he's autistic or a military kid. Forget all that. He's a kid. And you don't use children as examples on national television like that."

Tammy Bruce seems to have heard the message loud and clear, because on her show yesterday she issued an apology to Michael and his family for the way she treated him.
