20 Celebrities Who Chose To Marry An Ordinary Person

Gossip Cop / E! News

If you've dreamed of marrying your favorite celebrity heartthrob, don't give up hope just yet.

These 20 famous actors or singers have married just a regular person, like you or me.

And some of the stories behind how they fell in love should be turned into a rom-com!

1. Eddie Redmayne

The Theory of Everything actor is one of the most popular names in Hollywood, and during the height of his fame he fell in love with just an ordinary person.

When Redmayne needed help with public relations, he paid a visit to publicist Hannah Bagshawe.

Interestingly, the two had met more than a decade before, when they were just school kids. When they reunited, the actor revealed that he didn't feel a spark at first, but they slowly began loving each other.

In 2014, the couple tied the knot, and now they share two kids.

"I love being married. I feel so settled in my skin. So lucky to have the most wonderful, supportive, beautiful wife," he said, according to the Daily Mirror.

2. Matt Damon

There's nothing more romantic than love at first sight, which is why we're all obsessed with stories like Romeo & Juliet and Titanic.

This way of falling in love seems to only happen in the movies, but Damon was lucky enough to have his own happily ever after.

The Good Will Hunting actor met his wife Luciana Barroso while at a bar in Miami. They immediately fell in love and said their vows in 2005.

"I literally saw her across a crowded room," Damon told Ellen DeGeneres.

"Eight years and four kids later, that's my life. I don't know how else our paths would've crossed if that didn't happen. If all those things didn't happen."

3. Meryl Streep

You'd expect one of the most popular names in show business to be married to some hot shot like George Clooney, but that's far from the case.

The Mamma Mia! actress fell in love with successful sculptor, Don Gummer, after he lent her his apartment in 1978 when her life was in shambles.

This was right after her boyfriend, John Cazale, who played in The Godfather, died from terminal bone cancer.

"I haven't got over John's death, but I've got to go on living and Don has showed me how to do that," Streep told Star Chat.

The two have now been married for more than 40 years and share four kids together.

4. Tobey Maguire

While on the set of Seabiscuit in 2003, the actor met jewelry designer Jennifer Meyer.

This was only a year after Spider-Man was released, so you can imagine how excited Meyer was to meet her favorite superhero.

They both felt a connection right away and started dating for a few years before tying the knot in 2005.

The couple called it quits in 2016 after nine years of marriage, but they share two children.

5. Seth Meyers

The late night television host married human rights lawyer Alexi Ashe in 2013.

If you're wondering how they met, it wasn't because she was a crazy fan of his.

The two met at SNL actor Chris Kattan's wedding. Ashe's sister worked in the set design department of the comedy show.

"I had a sense that she was the closest I'd ever met to someone who I could see myself with. Pretty much right away," he told Your Tango.

The couple recently welcomed their first child, Ashe Olsen Meyers.

6. Scarlett Johansson

When The Avengers actress called it quits with Ryan Reynolds in 2011, she fell in love with an ordinary man a year later.

According to sources, Johansson met French artist Romain Dauriac through a mutual friend.

In 2014, they got married, and we've barely heard from them since.

Although they announced their separation in 2017, they have remained close for the sake of their daughter.

7. Lisa Kudrow

A year after Friends became the most popular show in the 90s, Lisa married Michael Stern, a French advertising executive.

The two actually met several years before Kudrow's acting career kicked off, when Stern was dating one of her friends.

"I was so afraid anyone would see that I liked him, so when he'd come to pick her up, he'd say, 'Oh, hello Lisa,' and I'd say, 'Hi,' and I'd go and leave the room and he thought I was a freak," she said.

Kudrow waited nearly six years until she finally had the chance to see him again.

They reunited at a birthday party and have been inseparable ever since. They also share a son, who is now 19 years old.

8. Zoe Saldana

The Avatar actress met her Italian artist husband, Marco Perego, in New York.

Unfortunately, because they're both so private, we're not sure how that first day exactly went down.

What we do know is that they wed in a secret ceremony in 2013 and welcomed three sons not too long after.

"I do what my heart says, what my heart feels. So from the moment I met my husband, we were together. We knew," she told Marie Claire magazine.

9. Jerry Seinfeld

The man responsible for bringing one of the greatest 90s sitcoms to life married an ordinary gal a year after the last episode of Seinfeld aired.

Jessica Sklar met the comedian at the Reebok Sports Club when she was working as the public relations executive for Tommy Hilfiger.

She was actually a newlywed at the time, but she and her husband got divorced not too long after they got married.

In 1999, Seinfeld and Skylar tied the knot.

"When someone comes into your house and you still feel comfortable, then you know you're with the right person," Seinfeld told Oprah. "I don't know what that is, but I knew that this was someone I wanted to spend my life with."

Jessica is now a cookbook author, and the longtime couple share three kids.

10. Oprah Winfrey

The famous talk show host and her longtime partner, educator Stedman Graham, have been together since 1986.

They've had a very private relationship, but what we do know is that they met at a charity event in Chicago. That was around the same time The Oprah Winfrey Show premiered.

"I'm with a very special person ... She's just so unbelievable but that has nothing to do with my life. That's her life. I just support her in her life. And she supports me in my life," Graham told CNN in 2012.

The couple have chosen not to get married or have kids, but they're still happy. Could this be the secret to a 30-year long relationship?

11. Jon Bon Jovi

The rock singer met his soon-to-be wife, Dorothea Hurley, when they were in high school.

They dated for a few years, but split up during the time his music career was taking off. Despite being propelled into the limelight, Bon Jovi defied rockstar stereotypes and got back together with Hurley.

In 1989, the couple tied the knot, and they now share four children together.

His female fan base were undoubtedly shocked (me included), but the singer knew he had to listen to his heart.

"We did it for us and didn't give a damn," Bon Jovi told VH1. "I got a lot of heat from it, between the band, my parents, Doc [McGhee, Bon Jovi's manager]. Everybody was pissed off. It took me a couple of days before I realized that I don't give a shit what anybody thinks."

12. Joseph Gordon-Levitt

The 500 Days of Summer actor met his wife, Tasha McCauley, through mutual friends.

They started dating in 2013, and got married in secret a year later.

Because they're so secretive, we have no clue what their relationship is like. That being said, I think it's safe to assume that Gordon-Levitt fell in love with McCauley's ambitious personality.

She's the co-founder of the company Fellow Robots and a director at GeoSim. She also speaks three languages.

The couple are still happily married and have two children together.

13. Prince William

Nowadays, who doesn't know the Duchess of Cambridge?

Before she was royalty, Princess Diana's eldest son met Kate Middleton at the University of St. Andrews. They began dating in 2003, and got married in 2011.

"When I first met Kate I knew there was something very special about her. I knew there was possibly something that I wanted to explore there," William told UK Press Association after their engagement.

The royal couple are now the definition of marriage goals. They also share three beautiful kids together.

14. Steve Harvey

The Family Feud host was performing on stage in a Memphis comedy club when someone in the audience caught his eye.

The young girl was Marjorie Bridges-Woods. "I don't know who you are but I'm going to marry you," he announced to the crowd.

In 2007, the two got married, and now share three kids together.

"I wish every woman can find a soulmate like I've been blessed to find," Bridges-Wood told Essence magazine.

"This is really my best friend ... We complement each other and we bring out the best in each other so it's just a beautiful relationship all the way around."

15. Julia Roberts

The Pretty Woman actress almost married her Flatliners co-star Kiefer Sutherland and a handful of other celebrity men, but it turned out that the love of her life was actually right behind the camera, and not infront of it.

Daniel Moder was filming Roberts on the set of The Mexican when they fell in love, and they got married in 2002.

"When I think about what makes my life my life, and make sense and just shine inside of me, it's him. Everything has come from that," she confessed to Harper's Bazaar.

The couple share three kids and are still happily married.

16. Nicolas Cage

The National Treasure actor met his third wife, Alice Kim, while she was working as a waitress at a Los Angeles restaurant.

She went to ask him for his autograph, but he gave his phone number.

Despite having a 20-year age-gap, the couple got married in 2004.

They reportedly separated in 2016, but they share one son.

17. Patrick Dempsey

It's every girl's dream to marry their favorite Hollywood celebrity. For Jillian Fink, that dream came true.

The best part is that Dempsey wasn't a Grey's Anatomy star just yet. At the time, he was known for movies like Can't Buy Me Love and Lover Boy.

Fink was working at a hair salon when Dempsey walked in to get a haircut, and the rest is history.

The couple tied the knot in 1999 and share three children.

18. Conan O'Brien

Here's another story of love at first sight! I've got to say, these two are my favorite.

When the comedian was taping an episode of the Late Night with Conan O'Brien in 2000, an "incredibly beautiful" woman caught his eye.

Luckily, Liza Powel was also smitten for the talk show host.

"[She is] very intelligent, and funny, and a really good person," O'Brien told Piers Morgan about his wife.

The couple tied the knot in 2002 and have two children together.

19. Reese Witherspoon

After the Legally Blonde actress called it quits with Ryan Philippe, she met Jim Toth, who works at her talent agency, CAA.

According to a source close to Witherspoon, the mom-of-three has been "transformed" after her second marriage.

"Even now, she often gets giddy when she talks about him. They very much complement each other," the source told People.

They married in 2011 and have a son together.

20. Anne Hathaway

Here's another love story for the books!

The Princess Diaries star fell in love with her admirer, Adam Schulman. The couple met through friends in 2008, and tied the knot four years later.

"He changed my ability to be in the world comfortably," Hathaway told Elle magazine. "I need my husband. His unique and specific love has changed me."

The two welcomed their first son in early 2016.
