Cindy Ann Crawford was one of the most popular "It" girls of the late 80s and much of the 90s. In 1995, she was named the highest paid model on the planet by Forbes Magazine and she definitely got there through hard work.
She started her career with Elite Model Management in Chicago at the age of 17 after coming in second place at the agency's Look of the Year contest. Despite the great opportunity, Cindy wanted to pursue a degree in chemical engineering. However, after only a semester at Northwestern University, she dropped out and decided to pursue modelling full-time. It didn't take long before Elite New York added her to their roster.
Soon after, the brunette model started to take over runways around the world and graced the covers of magazines like Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and Elle. She has worked on major campaigns for some of the biggest fashion houses including Versace, Hermes, Oscar De La Renta and Calvin Klein. She's also made her mark in movies, advertisements and TV shows including hosting MTV's House of Style. In 1998 alone, Cindy made over 500 different appearances.
"Cindy changed the perception of the 'sexy American girl' from classic blue eyed blonde to a more sultry brunette with brains, charm, and professionalism to spare," Michael Kors once said.
About 15 years after her debut, a then 34-year-old Cindy retired from modelling in 2000. She wanted to spend more time with her former-model-turned businessman husband, Rande Gerber, and their son, Presley Walker, who was born a year earlier.
Crawford no longer partook in runway shows but she occasionally appeared in magazines and red carpets. She took a break from the limelight for a few years after welcoming her second child, Kaia Gerber, in 2001.
Over the years, the Gerber siblings have been spotted alongside their mother but it wasn't until recently, following their debut as models, that the attention has really shifted on them.
