Ed Sheeran Reveals Battle With Substance Abuse And How He Bounced Back

Fame is an idea that fascinates you, but when it comes to fruition it's not as glamorous as it may seem.

Singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran realized just that during his one-year hiatus from stardom, which he announced toward the end of 2015.

After releasing two immensely successful albums, '+' and 'x', Sheeran said his sudden rise to fame was hard to adjust to.

Also, the immense pressure and attention from social media didn't help either. He felt himself stuck in a cloud of negativity and confusion.

He felt it was easy to slip into the "pitfalls" of the entertainment industry.

"I just found myself slipping into all of them. Mostly, like, substance abuse. I never touched anything. I started slipping into it, and that's why I took a year off," Sheeran said on the U.K.'s Jonathon Ross Show.

But the man known for one of the hottest singles of 2017 said he couldn't have recovered without the help of someone very dear to him.

Cherry Seaborn, Sheeran's childhood friend and current girlfriend, was an immense help in the process to recovery.

"I needed someone to balance me out," he said.

Music was another factor on his road to recovery.

"I can't work under the influence, I can't write songs under the influence, I can't perform under the influence ... I've worked my whole life to get to where I am and you can't lose that over something that you do in your spare time."

Although it was only last week that Sheeran was back in the spotlight after he was hit by a car and damaged several bones in his body, it seems that he's slowly getting back on track.

The release of his new album 'í·' in early 2017 has fans going wild with hit tracks like Shape of You and Galway Girl.
