After Losing Her Husband This Grandma Received An Emotional Gift

Contrary to popular opinion, the holidays are not the most wonderful time of year for everyone.

What makes the holiday season extra special is having the chance to spend time with all the people who are important to you in your life.

For those who have lost a loved one and are still in the grieving process, Christmas can feel very lonely.

One grandmother from West Virginia has spent every Christmas for the past six decades with her husband, but after he passed away from cancer in March 2017, Christmas didn't feel the same as it once did.

But her granddaughter had a very special surprise for her!  While this happened in 2017, it came up in my Facebook memories and I felt it would still be worth sharing again this year.

Jeanie Gum and her husband, Bill, were high school sweethearts and were married for 64 years.

The West Virginia couple's granddaughter wanted to give something special to her "nanny" this year.

"It's been rough for my nanny since my papaw's passing, and we wanted to comfort her," Sammie Beaty told Good Housekeeping.

"I wanted to have something special that we could put in my papaw's chair, where he always would sit for our family Christmas. I thought it was a great idea to turn his sweater that he always wore on Christmas Eve into a pillow," Beaty said.

Beaty and her family had the pillow made with a special note: "This is a shirt I used to wear, and whenever you hold it, know I am there. Love, Bill."

The video was posted on Facebook on Dec. 8 2017 and went viral in only a few days. The heartwrenching video of Jeanie reading the message on her late husband's sweater has more than 5.7 million views.

"My nanny tells us every day to love one another daily and to say 'I love you' as much as you can, because you never when it will be the last time you say it to someone you love with your whole heart," Beaty said.

Christmas is still weeks away, and there are still a lot more presents to be given, but the pillow will be Jeanie's favorite gift of the season.

"She said it was the best present she has ever received in her life," Beaty remembered.
