Gather round everyone, we have good news!
Dietitian and blogger Chelsey Amer has made all of our wildest dreams come true. In a new interview with the Chicago Tribune, she argues that it's actually healthier to start your day with a slice of pizza than a bowl of breakfast cereal.
We don't need to be convinced, but if you're feeling confused, let Amer explain.
"You may be surprised to find out that an average slice of pizza and a bowl of cereal with whole milk contain nearly the same amount of calories," she told the paper.
"However, pizza packs a much larger protein punch, which will keep you full and boost satiety throughout the morning."
When you also consider that your average bowl of cereal contains much more sugar than a slice of pepperoni and cheese, the choice becomes obvious.
Amer says the swap could even help you avoid the mid-morning "sugar crash" that comes after enjoying your cereal bowl.
If you're not ready to make the jump to a morning meat lover's just yet, Amer has more advice to help you eat smarter in the morning.
What most Americans don't realize is almost all of our breakfast cereals are loaded with sugar.
If you're not ready to give up your daily bowl, Amer has some tips to choose healthier cereal options:
- Choose a brand packed with fiber, which keeps you feeling full all day. It will also help balance your cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
- Pick a cereal with low sugar. Aim for something with under three grams per serving, but with at least six grams of fiber.
- Top your bowl with berries, chopped fruit, or yogurt for added nutritional value.
On the other hand, it can help to break the rules once in a while.
Researchers studying low-carb diets identified that they can leave you feeling hungry and unsatisfied, which makes you cheat on your diet.
So maybe it's not such a bad idea to enjoy a piece of chocolate cake for breakfast. Your body metabolizes calories more quickly in the morning, and experts say eating sweets early helps fight cravings throughout the day.
Just make sure you don't skip breakfast, it's the most important meal of the day after all!
