We've all wondered how long it is actually socially acceptable to go without washing our hair. When we were growing up, we were taught to wash our hair everyday to keep it clean and not greasy.

However, the method that we all grew up doing might actually be doing more damage to our hair than we thought.

Our hair gets greasy after not washing it very similarly to how our face gets greasy. We have oil glands in our scalp that produce a substance called sebum, which provides moisture to our hair so it doesn't dry out.

When looking at how often we should wash our hair, the answer gets trickier because it varies for everyone. Each person produces a different amount of sebum on their scalp, therefore making every persons scalp different.

It can also depend on your skin type, hair type and styling methods. But good news, no one should have to wash their hair everyday.

For example, if your hair is damaged by styling you should try to wash it less often than if it is very healthy, this is because damaged hair is already very dry so washing it will only dry it our more.

If you have thick or curly hair, you can probably wash your hair a lot less often than someone with thin and straight hair.

Your skin acts the same way as your scalp, so you should be able to look at your skin for signs. For example if your skin is not super oily or not super dry, your scalp will be the same. If this is the case, you shouldn't need to wash your hair very often. On the other hand, if it is super oily you'll want to wash your hair much more often than if you have dry skin.
