Save Your Old Mascara Wands For The Most Adorable Reason Ever

If you use mascara, you probably don't think twice before tossing that old tube in the garbage once it starts to get nasty. Well, stop doing that right away because we have something else you can do with those wands, and it is adorable.

The Appalachian Wildlife Refuge is asking people who use mascara to save their old application wands rather than throw them away. On the organization's website, it explains that the old mascara wands are the perfect size for helping wildlife. I bet you are wondering how.

Well, they are wonderful for human helpers to use to remove things like fly eggs, fleas, and larvae from animals in distress. Especially the baby animals.

The refuge prefers the mascara wands to other brushes because the bristles are so much closer together. Those tiny bristles enable rescuers to get those miniature bugs off even the littlest of earth's creatures.

Kimberly Brewster, a co-founder of the non-profit, told Dearly.com all about how you can donate those wands.

"Clean the wand in warm, soapy water to remove residual mascara. Dry completely and mail. There is a form on the website to send in with the wands. We will further sanitize them before using on the patients."

Merely clean off the brushes, and make sure to include this form when you send them in. Ship them to P.O. Box 1211, Skyland, NC 28776. Obviously, you want to make sure to weigh them accurately, so the postage is correct.

The refuge can never get too many wands. Brewster explained why:

"The number used varies widely and depends on the season. We are about to go into "˜baby season' where many orphaned wild animals are brought in for care and treatment. Since babies usually come in litters, there can be a need for many wands with just one rescue," she said.

The wands aren't just for use at the one location, either, and it sounds like they go through quite a few.

"We also share the wands with other wildlife rehabilitators. At the state symposium in January, the wildlife rehabilitators grabbed up 5,000 wands in just a couple of hours."

THAT'S NOT ALL

That's not all the refuge needs at the moment, either. Brewster added that:

"We are also in need of food, treatment supplies, and equipment for the new Wildlife Urgent Care. This emergency room is expecting to see over 2,000 animals in 2018. The wishlist of items is on the website."

You can find that wishlist if you click here. Rescuers ask that you not purchase new mascara wands. If a monetary donation seems more like something you are interested in, those are also desperately needed. Send the money you would have used to purchase new wands to the refuge instead.

Right now, the hashtag #WandsforWildlife is making the rounds on social media. Who doesn't like helping baby animals?
