Doctors Think Teen Had Miscarriage After Mom Finds Her Covered in Blood, But She'd Already Given Birth

Pregnant teen Erica Gomez was inside her Texas home February 9 when she started to go into labor.

According to Fox 7, the 17-year-old gave birth to a baby girl inside her bathroom.

But instead of alerting her parents and getting medical attention, she allegedly orchestrated a brutal attack on the newborn.

Just after giving birth, police say Gomez killed the baby girl by stabbing her nine times, the New York Post reports.

She allegedly wrapped the lifeless newborn in a bathrobe and took her outside to a neighbor's shed, where she hid the child's lacerated body before returning to bed, according to court documents.

But as the teen slept, police said her mother noticed that she was bleeding and decided to take the teen to the hospital.

Gomez, who was scared to speak out about the birth, didn't tell her mother that she'd delivered the newborn earlier that night.

According to Fox 7, doctors at the hospital diagnosed Gomez with a miscarriage.

But 12 hours after the teen gave birth in the bathroom, her 13-year-old neighbor discovered the slain newborn's body inside of his family's storage shed.

The 17-year-old was arrested last week and is facing a capital murder charge for the little girl's death, ABC 13 reports.

It remains unclear why the 17-year-old allegedly killed her newborn child, but the local community was left shocked by the crime. Erica Martinez, Gomez's confirmation teacher, told KFOX:

"I cannot understand what she was thinking or feeling."

Thomas Moreno, who lives on the same street as Gomez, said that he was upset by the news of the baby's death.

Forensic Examiner Doctor Janice Diaz confirmed the child's death was a homicide. She had been stabbed five times in the back, three times in the neck, and once on the side, Fox 7 reports.

Gomez is currently being held at El Paso County jail on $800,000 bond.
