Milissa Davis’ 12-year-old son, Camden, is severely autistic. He is unable to speak and struggles with other tasks including reading and writing. But despite her son’s difficulties, Davis had taken comfort in the fact that he could still attend Greater Baton Rouge Hope Academy, a school known for being very accommodating to students with learning disabilities.
Asperger syndrome, those on the autism spectrum, Down syndrome, dyslexia, cognitive disabilities, and ADHD. That is, until she made an awful discovery about his teachers.
Camden recently became very aggressive and would frequently wet the bed — behavior that was very unusual for the otherwise sweet boy. Davis tried to talk to school officials about what could be causing Camden’s change in behavior, but she was brushed off. That’s when she decided to hide an audio recorder inside his backpack.
When Camden came home later that day, Davis played back the recording. What she heard shocked and disgusted her.
Camden’s teachers were recorded making fun of him when he was struggling in school. The quotes below are just a few examples of their cruel comments.
“Camden, why don’t you have anything written down? That’s why you can’t sit with everyone. Tell your momma that.”
“You’re just writing the word. What is hard about it?”
“Let’s see what they do with him in [expletive] public school. He was going to go to Live Oak Middle. Uh ah, he wouldn’t make it for a minute.”
To say Davis was heartbroken is an understatement.
“I just wanted to cry, scream and do everything I could because it was so bad,” she said. “To think that I had sent my son there every day, and what had happened before, that I didn’t know about.”
Fortunately, when she brought the recording to the school and gave it to officials, they acted quickly. Both teachers were fired within a few days. More on this story in the video below.
