Animals are returned to shelters after being adopted for lots of reasons, including not being a great fit for the family in question, not getting along with other pets, and for not having the best temperament. While that's all understandable to an extent, the reason why this dog found herself without a home again is heartbreaking and strange.

Helena, a four-year-old pit bull, was brought into to the LifeLine Animal Project in Atlanta, Georgia, last September as a stray. She was adopted a month later, then brought back this week.

"The man who returned her said she was too nice," Karen Hirsch, public relations director for the shelter, told The Dodo. "It was obvious the gentleman was looking for a guard dog. He also suggested she be adopted by a woman "˜because they are more into that petting stuff.'"

Shelter workers believe the man had only adopted Helena because of the stereotypes surrounding pit bulls. He'd likely been looking for a tough, aggressive dog "” the complete opposite of this sweet girl.

Since then, the shelter has been searching for another home for Helena, one in which she could get as many cuddles as she wants.

"She loves to lay around, be pet, give kisses and eat treats," Hirsch said. "She is a calm dog who would love Netflix binges." Despite being abandoned by the man she gave all her love to, Hirsch says Helena hasn't shown any signs of separation anxiety. She's been ready for a loving family who would appreciate her as she is.

"We want Helena to go to a home where she can be smothered in love," Hirsch said. And we've got some pretty fantastic news to share about that.

Yesterday, the shelter announced that Helena was finally adopted! Now "the snuggliest pup in the ATL" will finally get to bask in all the love her new family has to offer.
