Orangutan Gives Birth On Camera For The 1st Time Ever, See When She Shows Baby To The Keeper

In the summer of 2013, conservationists from the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust in Jersey had the absolute pleasure of witnessing what they called a "miracle birth." Dana, a critically endangered Sumatran orangutan, gave birth to KeaJaiban, meaning "miracle" in Indonesian "” and they caught the incredible process on camera.

"Born to a mum who we were told would never have a child, "˜Kea' came into the world thanks to the kindness and skill of a human doctor," the organization wrote. Dana had been pregnant once before in 2009, but sadly, it ended in stillbirth, nearly killing her along with the baby. It also resulted in her fallopian tubes being blocked, leaving Dana unable to have another baby.

But thanks to Jersey General Hospital's head obstetrician, Neil MacLachlan, who performed surgery on the orangutan, Dana was able to conceive once again with 27-year-old Dagu. But her story only got more remarkable from there.

When Dana welcomed her little bundle of joy into the world, the conservationists recorded the beautiful moment in a "world first." Never before has the birth of an orangutan been captured in such amazing detail, making the footage absolutely priceless.

Mom knew exactly what to do as soon as she pushed out her baby girl. She got straight to work on removing the amniotic sac, then cleared Kea's airway, proving how capable she is as a mother. And just like a human baby, Kea started bawling right away.
